Driver dies after crashing into Aylmer hydro pole

A 57-year-old Aylmer man has been killed in a single-vehicle crash in the town.

Emergency crews were called to the collision on South Street West between Wellington and Raglan streets shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Monday. A vehicle had left the roadway and hit a hydro pole.

The driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man's name has not been released.

Area residents were left in the dark overnight while hydro crews worked to repair the damaged pole. Power was restored around 4 a.m. on Tuesday. The road, which had been closed for several hours, was also reopened in time for the morning commute.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Aylmer police said.
