Port Lambton swimmer named Western's top female athlete

A Port Lambton swimmer has been named Western University's Female Athlete of the Year.

Shona Branton took home the honour during Thursday's 82nd Mustangs Athletic Awards Celebration, recognizing the school's top athletes during the 2022-23 season.

Branton finished first in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) in the 50 metre breaststroke, and first in U SPORTS in the 100 metre breaststroke. She also placed second in the OUA in the 4x100 medley relay and 4x50 relay.

Branton, a former member of the Sarnia Rapids swim team, was named a First Team All Star in the OUA and First Team All Canadian by U SPORTS for her achievements.

In a media release, Branton said swimming gets overlooked a lot because it's not a super popular sport.

"Winning this award and bringing awareness to our team is awesome," she said. "We work really hard throughout the year and have the longest season training from September until March. I'm so proud."

Branton attended Wallaceburg District Secondary School.
