U-S Hog Price Drop Pulls Down Ontario Price

Ontario's Base Market Hog Price dropped almost 2 dollars per hundred kilograms last week.

OMAFRA's John Bancroft says that reflects a 51 cents per hundredweight drop in the CME Constructed Price weekly average.

He says the stronger Canadian dollar also had an impact.

Bancroft says market hog sales this year continue to be running about 2 point 7 per cent higher than last year.

That breaks out to an increase of 2 per cent in first quarter sales, 5 per cent in the second quarter, 2 point 8 per cent in the third quarter.

The ministry says fourth quarter sales to date are about even with last year.

U-S slaughter for the past four weeks is running about 4 per cent below a year ago.
