Weaker Loonie Helps Push Up Ontario Hog Price

There was a slight increase in the CME Constructed Price weekly average for hogs last week.

That, combined with a slight drop in the Canadian dollar, saw the Ontario Base Market Hog 100 index average price go up 47 cents per hundred kilogram.

OMAFRA's John Bancroft says fourth quarter hog sales to date in Ontario are slightly behind last year's fourth quarter numbers.

Year-over-year, however, Ontario market hog sales are up 2 point 6 per cent over last year.

U-S slaughter over the past four weeks is down almost 4 and a half per cent from the same period last year.

Ontario's weekly average dressed weight is above 102 kilograms.

The U-S dressed weight is 213 pounds - 3 pounds headier than last year at this time.

Bancroft expects little significant chance in Ontario's average hog price this week.
