USDA Sees Slight Increase In 2015 Meat Production

The USDA has lowered it's estimate for 2014 total meat production in the U-S and raised it's forecast for 2015.

The department says lower slaughter will reduce beef production, although that's partially offset by heavier carcass weights.

U-S hog slaughter is now expected to be a bit higher for 2014.

For 2015, the department expects a small increase in beef production will move total meat production slightly higher.

The cattle price forecasts for 2014 and 2015 are raised from last month on continued demand strength and tight supplies for fed cattle.

The 2014 steer price goes up 88 cents to 155.29 - the 2015 price now expected to range from 160-172 per hundredweight.

The U-S hog price forecast for this year is lowered but the 2015 price remains unchanged.

The 2014 barrow and gilt price slips by 38 cents to 76.22 a hundredweight while the 2015 projected price remains at from 63 to 68 dollars.
