Canadian Egg Production Down, Ontario Up, Year-Over-Year

Statistics Canada's latest egg production numbers show a distinct contrast between what's going on nationally and what's going on in Ontario.

The agency says national production in October was up slightly from September and down almost 1 per cent from a year ago.

Ontario's production was down slightly in October from September while year-over-year production was up over 2 per cent.

The average national farm gate price for eggs in Canada was down both from September and from October of 2013.

While the Ontario price was down slightly from September, it was up over 4 per cent from 2013.

That combination of higher production and a higher price saw the value of Ontario egg production go up almost 5 per cent in October from a year ago.

The lower production and lower farm gate price knocked the value of October Canadian egg production down about 1 per cent from a year ago.
