New DFO Chair Wants To Replace U-S Ingredient Imports

The new chair of Dairy Farmers of Ontario says he's hoping to make some progress on what he calls an ingredient strategy.

Bruce County dairy farmer Ralph Dietrich says there are milk components coming into Canada from the U-S to be used in the processing sector.

He says DFO would like to see the Canadian dairy industry in a position to be able to replace those imports.

He's also hoping to see some progress with the skim milk removal program.

Dietrich says too much skim milk has to be removed from the market by the government.

He feels a more efficient dairy industry would be able to reduce that surplus.

Dietrich was elected chair at the Dairy Farmers of Ontario's recent Board meeting in Toronto.

Dietrich points out the new Dairy Innovation and Research Centre in Elora is designed to be a staged facility - open to additions as and when required.

Dietrich says he's not sure yet just how heavy that new workload is going to be.
