Birnham Pork's piglet weigh scale is one of two winners of the F. X. Aherne Prize for Innovative Pork Production handed out at this year's Banff Pork Seminar.
The Arkona farm produces weaned piglets.
Their piglet scale gives them a way to weigh those animals to make sure they're meeting marketing objectives and getting paid for their efforts.
This year's other winner is Heartland Pork in South Dakota.
They came up with what they call the E Z Hog Tub hog handler.
It helps reduce stress on pigs and people during loading, producing faster loading and lower plant losses.
The award is named after the late Doctor Frank Aherne, a professor of swine nutrition and production at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
Doctor Aherne is described as a major force in science-based progress in the Western Canadian pork industry.
The 2015 Banff Pork Seminar was held this week in Alberta.
