Ontario 2014 Market Hog Sales Up Almost 15 Per Cent From 2013

There was a slight increase in the number of pork producers in Ontario last year from 2013.

Ontario Pork says the increase was 1 point 36 per cent.

That was one of the numbers in the 2014 Pork Industry Profile posted this week by Ontario Pork.

Despite last year's increase, the profile says pork producer numbers in Ontario are down over 93 per cent from the more than 20 thousand pork producers in the province in 1979.

There were also fewer than half as many pork producers in the province in 2014 as there were in 2004.

The 2014 Ontario Pork Industry Profile says total value of market hog sales last year was just over 1 billion dollars - up almost 15 per cent from 2013.

The average 100 per cent formula price for 2014 was 209 dollars per hundred kilograms - up 25 percent from a year ago.

The average cost to produce a hog in Ontario last year was 177 dollars per hundred kilograms, up just over 1 per cent from 2013.
