Lower U-S Hog Cut Out Prices Not Impacting Bacon Costs

The latest University of Missouri hog outlook has U-S carcass prices down more than 40 dollars from a year ago.

The outlook reports last Thursday's negotiated carcass price for plant delivered hogs at 64.01 per hundred weight.

That's also 93 cents lower than the previous week.

Last week's U-S slaughter was down 1 and a half per cent from the previous week - but up over 7 per cent from a year ago.

That's the seventh straight week U-S hog slaughter has been higher than the previous year.

Last week was also the seventh straight week the U-S pork cutout value was lower than a year ago.

According to the University of Missouri report, while wholesale prices suggest the huge increase in bacon demand that started five years ago may be coming to an end, retail prices say no.

The report points out that January retail bacon prices in the U-S were more than a dollar per pound higher than prices for either boneless pork chops or boneless ham.
