Former Mitchell Hog Plant Switching To Turkey Processing

Sofina Foods is going to convert the former Great Lakes Speciality Meats plant in Mitchell into a turkey processing operation.

The plant had been processing hogs until it went out of business last year.

Sofina had purchased the plant and has now confirmed it intends to switch to turkey processing there.

No start date for the conversion work, but the company expects to have it up and running later this year.

Vice President Jeff McDowell says the Mitchell plant gives Sofina the ability to provide fresh turkey to it's further processing operations in London and Brampton.

He says it also confirms the company's commitment to the Ontario turkey industry and the province's turkey farmers.

McDowell calls it the largest single investment in the Canadian turkey industry in over 25 years.

Sofina Foods is headquartered in Markham, Ontario.

It has a broad portfolio of branded and private label pork, beef, turkey and chicken products.

It's labels include Lilydale, Fearman's Pork and Fletcher's.

Sofina currently operates 17 facilities in Canada and one in the northwestern U-S, 3 hatcheries and over 48 hundred employees.
