Ontario now has it's second avian influenza control zone.
The 10 kilometer radius zone was set up on the weekend around a poultry farm southwest of Kitchener.
Preliminary testing confirmed an H5 avian influenza virus infection on that farm.
More testing is underway to confirm whether it's the same strain that showed up recently in a turkey farm near Woodstock.
The Feather Board Command Centre has issued a heightened biosecurity advisory for all commercial producers and small flock growers in this second control zone.
In essence, those growers are advised to keep it clean to keep the virus out.
The CFIA says wild migratory birds are known carriers of the virus.
The FBCC says birds with outdoor access should not share areas with wild ducks, geese or shorebirds.
Free range areas should not have ponds or open feeders which could be attractions for wild waterfowl - areas which could be contaminated with droppings from those waterfowl.
And the Centre suggests poultry producers be prepared to cover their entire yard with netting or enclose birds under roofed cover if necessary.
Any producers who suspect any signs of health concerns in their flock are being advised to contact their veterinarian as well as their board or call 1-877-SOS-BYRD.
The Feather Board Control Centre emphasizes poultry products continue to be safe to ease as long as they are handled and cooked properly.
