DFO Official Says Chinese Move In Ontario Dairy Sector 'Only Rumours'

A Dairy Farmers of Ontario spokesman is discounting rumours about a scheme to produce milk for export outside Canada's supply-managed system.

Some of the province's producers have been hearing stories about dairy farms being bought up by Chinese interests, with the milk then processed in plants here for direct export to China.

Those stories suggest it would all be done outside the current supply-managed dairy system.

The DFO spokesman says while he's heard the rumours, he's not aware of any such plans in reality.

He also points out the Canadian system would not allow it to happen.
