Study Sets Out Dairy Sector's Impact On Economy - Locally And Nationally

A study of the economic impacts of the Canadian dairy industry takes a close-up look at a region including parts of Huron, Bruce, Perth, Wellington and Oxford counties.

It reports that area had over 13 hundred dairy farms in 2013.

That's about one third of the dairy farms in the province.

They were responsible for 37 per cent of the milk produced in Ontario that year.

The study says the dairy industry in that region was responsible for almost 5 per cent of the jobs and just over 4 per cent of the GDP in that region.

Nationally, the study says the dairy industry leads the agricultural economy of seven of the provinces.

It reports there were over 12 thousand dairy farms in Canada in 2013 - generating almost 6 billion dollars in cash receipts - nearly 11 per cent of total Canadian farm cash receipts for that year.
