Weather Helping Ontario Asparagus Crop

The warm weather means conditions are right for fresh Ontario asparagus to be available in large amounts this weekend.

John Jaques grows asparagus just north of Thamesville.

He says while there has been a limited supply so far, the crop is starting to pop up quickly now.

Jaques says it's a little later this year than some years.

"Some years you get that heat wave asparagus thinks it's spring and pops out of the ground and then gets frozen off and that's a big loss," he says. "Hopefully we can avoid any of that happening from here on in."

Jaques had been irrigating the crop on his Chatham-Kent farm because his soil was dry, but says rain this week and warmer weather are causing the crop to grow quickly.
