Global Food Price Index Lowest Since September 2009

The United Nations says world food prices continue to drop.

The FAO Food Price Index for May was at its lowest level since September of 2009.

It fell 1 point 4 per cent from April.

The May index was down over 20 per cent from a year ago.

The FAO says cereals and dairy products were responsible for much of last month's decline.

The Cereal Price Index was down almost 4 per cent to it's lowest level since July of 2010.

The Dairy Price Index was down almost 3 per cent from April.

The FAO's Meat Price Index was down 1 per cent from April.

The agency says generally lower prices for meat exports from the U-S continue to weigh on that index.
