Last Ontario Bird Flu Control Zone Lifted

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has lifted the final Avian Influenza Control Zone in Ontario.

This was the one near Kitchener.

The zone was lifted after a 21 day waiting period following the cleaning and disinfection process at the two infected facilities in that area.

The CFIA says permits are no longer required for the movement of birds and bird products in Ontario.

However, the agency also points out a 3 month enhanced surveillance period is now required by the World Organisation for Animal Health before a zone can recover it's avian influenza free status.

The CFIA is reminding poultry owners to continue to use strict biosecurity measures on their property and immediately report any signs of illness in their birds.
