Researching Feeding Hogs Lower Quality Grains

A University of Guelph researcher is looking for ways for pigs to digest lower quality feeds.

Doctor Ming Fan thinks that could leave more higher-quality grains available for human consumption or ethanol production.

The problem with the byproducts from many grain processing techniques is they are high in fibre.

Animals with only one stomach chamber - like pigs - have a hard time digesting high levels of fibre.

However, Doctor Fan has discovered a naturally occuring enzyme in a pig's gut which he believes can be used to increase the animal's ability to digest fibre-dense, lower quality grains and byproducts.

His plan is to naturally replicate the enzyme into a feed supplement for animals.

While Doctor Fan says the enzymes need further development before they reach the livestock feed market, he is currently finalizing his research data for commercialization.
