Food Price Index Drops

The United Nations says it's global food price index recorded it's sharpest monthly drop in August since December of 2008.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation's overall index fell 5.2 per cent from July. That included a 7 per cent drop in the cereal price index, an 8.6 per cent drop in it's vegetable oil index and a 9.1 per cent month-over-month drop in it's dairy price index.

The cereal price index is now over 15 per cent lower than it was in August of 2014.

The drop in the vegetable oil price index puts that one at it's lowest level since March of 2009.

The FAO says it's meat price index in August was virtually unchanged from the previous month.
