EFO Quota Program Winners From Huron, Wellington Counties

Farmers from Huron and Wellington County are this year's Egg Farmers of Ontario New Entrant Quota Loan Pool recipients.

Brent and Kim Grainger have about 140 acres of workable land on their farm near Zurich.

Andrew and Lindsay Elgersma have an 80 acre farm near Elora.

Both couples plan to build a layer barn next year.

The New Entrant Quota Loan Program allows them to borrow up to 10 thousand units of quota, based on them paying for 1 unit of every 2 they borrow.

After 10 years, the loaned quota is returned to the program, at 10 per cent per year, to be loaned to future participants.

The Graingers and Elgersmas were among 30 applicants to the program this year.

Egg Farmers of Ontario uses the program to encourage new farmers to get into the Ontario egg farming business.

EFO says four of the new egg farm families are already in operation from the earlier years of the program.
