Canadian Cattle Market In 'Significant Correction'

Canfax calls what's happening in the Canadian cattle market a significant correction.

Canfax is the markets and trends arm of the Canadian Cattlemen's Association.

It reports the price swing from the annual highs to the fourth quarter lows this year were record large.

For instance - calf prices have dropped almost 25 per cent from the summer high - a drop of about 80 dollars per hundredweight.

However, Canfax points out current prices are still 80 dollars per hundredweight higher than they were in 2013.

While cow-calf producers have had a very profitable year, Canfax says by year end feedlot margins have moved significantly in the red.

Looking ahead, the weaker Canadian dollar is expected to cushion Canadain cattle prices compared to what's going to happen in the U-S.
