Ontario Pork Updates Industry Profile

Ontario Pork has updated its industry profile for 2015.

Included in the update - the fact there are fewer than half as many pork producers in the province now as there were ten years ago.

The almost 1,400 producers in the province marketed $5.17 million hogs last year, about 4% cent more than were marketed in 2014.

About 27% of the province's producers market less than 500 hogs a year.

About 37% ship between 500 and 3,000 a year while about 36% market more than 3, 000 animals a year.

The market price for Ontario hogs fell a lot further than the cost of production last year.

Ontario Pork says the average 100% formula price for 2015 was $166 per hundred kilograms - down 20.4% from the year before.

The average cost to produce a hog in Ontario last year was $157 per hundred kilograms, down almost 2% from 2014.
