Cider Association Ready For New Rules

The Ontario Craft Cider Association is looking forward to the government's modernization of wine and spirits retailing in Ontario.

The group was part of the negotiations and discussions leading up to the recommendations.

Total annual cider sales in Ontario are around $70 million, of which 70% is imported cider. Ontario craft cider currently has a small share of the sales - around $4 million annually.

Part of the government's announcement is that cider will be included in the Beer in Grocery initiative, with a certain proportion of a grocer's cider shelf space set aside for products from small cider producers.

Thomas Wilson, Chair of the Ontario Craft Cider Association, says the group looks forward to developing a micro-cidery strategy in the future.
