Ag Critic Concerned About OMAFRA Budget Cut Impact

Conservative Agriculture and Food Critic Toby Barrett is critical of the province's 28 million dollar cut to the OMAFRA budget.

He says that's one of the items in the latest budget that will magnify the damage being done to rural Ontario by the government's financial policies.

The Haldimand-Norfolk MPP told the legislature this week he's already hearing rumours of both the Rural Economic Development Fund and the Local Food Fund being eliminated.

Agriculture Minister Jeff Leal says the Local Food Fund is not being eliminated but being moved to the Greenbelt Fund.

Barrett also expressed concern about the impact of the cuts on Ontario's food and beverage sector.

He called that sector something the province can be proud of - but questioned how it can be maintained with the fiscal decisions being made by the Ontario Liberal government.
