One U-S Economist Sees Low Feed Costs In 2016

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain suggests this year's U-S hog producer feed costs may be the lowest since 2007.

Plain's weekly Hog Outlook bases that on the latest USDA planting intentions report, which included a 6 point 4 per cent increase in prospective corn acres planted this year over last year's numbers.

The Outlook puts last week's national negotiated barrow and gilt price down 30 cents from the week before.

And the U-S hog slaughter was up a tenth of a per cent on the week, but down almost half a per cent from the same week last year.

Canadian hog slaughter so far this year, to March 26th, is up 3 point 2 per cent from a year ago.

In Ontario, hog slaughter is up 2 point 8 per cent.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada says our live hog exports to the U-S are up 11 point 3 per cent while our overall imports of fresh and frozen pork are down almost 4 per cent.
