Canadian Live Hog Exports To U-S Up Almost 12 Per Cent

Federal hog slaughter in this country continues to run ahead of last year.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports slaughter so far this year is up 3 per cent from a year ago.

Government figures show live hog exports to the U-S are up almost 12 per cent so for this year.

And total pork imports so far this year are down just over 6 per cent from a year ago.

In the U-S, the University of Missouri's Ron Plain reports a big increase in pork exports to China in February.

He says February exports were up 1 per cent from January and 2 and a half per cent from February of last year.

Last week's national negotiated barrow and gilt carcass price was up 13 cents on the week, $3.78 on the year.

U-S hog slaughter last week was 2 point 154 million head - down just over 1 per cent from the previous week and 1 per cent from the same week last year.
