'Trade Dependent' Canadian Pork Industry Calls For Quick TPP Ratification

The Executive Director of the Canadian Pork Council says his industry depends on trade.

John Ross told the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade this week that more than two thirds of the hogs produced in this country are exported.

Ross argues its in Canada's best interests to ratify the Trans Pacific Partnership as soon as possible.

If there are delays to the implementation of the TPP, he suggests the government undertake a vigorous strategy of bilateral or regional trade negotiations in high-priority markets such as Japan and Vietnam.

An analysis conducted for the Council found the Canadian pork industry would increase its exports by 300 million dollars once the TPP is fully implemented.

The same analysis said the industry would also create 4 thousand new jobs under the TPP.
