Ontario Hog Slaughter Up, Prices Down Over 3 Per Cent

Hog slaughter in this country is up 2 point 4 per cent so far this year from last year.

Ontario's 2 point 2 million head are up 3 point 1 per cent from 2015.

Agriculture and AgriFood Canada has the national hog price down 3 point 1 per cent, Ontario's 3 point 5 per cent, from the same time last year.

Federal figures show lower ending stocks for pork in this country at the end of 2015 than in 2014 - but still more than in the three years prior to that.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter was just over 2 million head.

That was up almost 10 per cent from the week before - which was a short week because of the Memorial Day holiday.

However, it was down almost 2 per cent from the year before.

The University of Missouri's Ron Plain reports Friday's national negotiated barrow and gilt price was up $3.29 from the week before, but 29 cents lower than for the same week last year.
