Maple Leaf's Hog Operations Lost Money In Second Quarter

Maple Leaf Foods says its second quarter earnings were up this year.

The company reports net earnings for the quarter of 31 point 4 million dollars - compared to a loss of 7 point 5 million a year ago.

Earnings for the first six months came to 73 point 7 million.

Maple Leaf had a loss of 10 point 4 million in the first half of last year.

Its Meat Products Group posted a 4 point 1 per cent increase in sales in the second quarter - 3 point 2 per cent for the first half.

However, Maple Leaf's Agribusiness Group, which includes its hog production operations, posted a loss of 2 point 4 million dollars in the second quarter.

That compares with earnings of 4 point 1 million the year before.

Maple Leaf's Agribusiness Group has lost 10 point 1 million dollars so far this year compared to a 6 point 6 million dollar profit the year before.

Two men arrested in Tashmoo Ave. standoff

Sarnia police said the investigation began on May 29 after the victim was allegedly attacked by acquaintances at a residence near Tashmoo Avenue and Christopher Drive at Aamjiwnaang First Nation.
