U-S Hog Price Continues 5-Week Slide

Frozen pork and beef stocks were down in the U-S at the end of June.

Ron Plain of the University of Missouri reports pork in storage was down 7 point 7 per cent from a year ago and beef 4 point 9 per cent.

Chicken and turkey stocks were up from a year ago.

Plain says the national negotiated barrow and gilt carcass price in the U-S last Thursday was down $3.26 on the week, over 14 dollars lower than just five weeks ago.

Last week's U-S hog slaughter was 1 point 1 million head, up 2 per cent on the week, almost 3 per cent on the year.

Plain suggests that's the most hogs ever slaughtered in the U-S for a week in July.

Here in Canada, Agriculture and AgriFood Canada reports federal slaughter so far this year is up 1 point 7 per cent.

Ontario's average weekly price for the week ending July 23rd was up 6 point 6 per cent from a year ago.
