Alberta Operation Claims To Be Among First RWA Hog Shippers In Canada

A major farm in the prairies has become one of the first Canadian operations to send RWA hogs to market.

A shipment of 200 hogs raised without antibiotics was recently shipped from the Spring Creek Hutterite Colony to Britco Pork Inc. of Langley, B.C..

Spring Creek swine manager Paul Hofer suggests farm operations are best set up for the future if they reduce their reliance on antimicrobials.

While the colony treats animals with drugs if they need it, those animals are then separated and shipped to a different market.

The farm must also pass regular third-party audits to ensure RWA status.

Hofer says it's more work to run the raised without antibiotics program - but feels it's been worth it for Alberta hog operation.
