Pork Industry Looking Forward To Increasing Exports

Canada's pork industry produces about two million tonnes of meat each year.

The Canadian Pork Council notes two-thirds of the product is exported, and now they plan to boost that number in each of the next five years.

CPC Chair Rick Bergmann says Canadian producers have worked hard to develop its world-wide reputation as a reliable supplier of high-quality pork.

He feels the key to sustaining success is through accessing a wide variety of markets.

With CETA now signed the council says the tariff free access will lead to big exports of processed products.

The deal specifies an agreement with Europe for a quota volume equivalent to 80,000 tonnes of pork cuts, once it's been fully phased in over the next half decade.
