CFIA Wants Input For Proposed Animal Transportation Amendments

The federal government is seeking input for proposed animal transportation amendments.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says it's looking for public comment to the proposed changes to the Health of Animals Regulations Part XII, which deals with humane transportation.

Current regulations have been in place since 1977 and amendments have been added periodically since then.

The CFIA notes the proposed changes are the result of a decade of consultation with special interest groups, the public and members of the industry.

The agency feels protecting animal welfare is a shared responsibility for all involved in the process, including processors, transporters, producers and the public.

Draft amendments can be viewed in the Canada Gazette.

The public comment period is open until February 15th.
