Hog Industry Leaning Heavily On Exports To China

Agriculture and Agri-food Canada's recent hog statistic report indicates the nation's 6.2 per cent in exports can largely be credited to two countries.

Pork exports to Cuba were up 61.5 per cent on the year through the first 11 months of 2016, which amounts to 2,000 tonnes.

The massive increase to China countered the decrease seen with every other one of Canada's trade partners.

Exports to China leading up to December were up by more than 180,000 tonnes, which is about a quarter of all exports and an increase of 168 per cent on 2015.

AAFC also notes pork slaughter so far this year is down 4.9 per cent from last year.

Lighter weights are also being reported so far this year, as overall production is down by 6.6 per cent.
