Wheat Stocks High After Bumper 2016 Crop

After a bumper wheat crop in 2016, it's no surprise that Statistics Canada is reporting huge wheat stocks to start 2017.

Total stocks of wheat for the new year were at 25 million tonnes, up 16.8 per cent from a year earlier.

The agency says that makes sense, given the record yields, but a noticable trend was the fact that on-farm stocks are up 21 per cent while commercial stocks have declined by 3.5 per cent.

Canadian total corn stocks to end 2016 were up 3 per cent to 11.7 million tonnes.

Soybeans stocks reversed trend, down 4.3 per cent for the year to 3.4 million tonnes.

StatsCan also notes canola and oat stocks were down 10 and 5 points respectively, while barley stocks rose by almost 12 per cent.
