Chickens In Toronto? Plan To Drop Ban Closer To Becoming Reality

Toronto councillors are considering a pilot project that would allow residents in some areas to raise chickens in their backyards.

The move follows a survey that suggested that lifting the ban on chickens could be a popular move.

Councillor Justin Di Ciano says home-raised chickens provide a healthier alternative to store-bought eggs, and described them as a ``cruelty-free'' alternative to factory-farmed eggs.

Several Ontario municipalities including Kingston, Brampton, Niagara Falls, Caledon and Saugeen Shores all allow chickens to be kept in backyard coops.
