Former Ag Minister named Canadian High Commissioner to UK

Former Federal Agriculture Minister Ralph Goodale has been named Canada's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.

Agriculture and trade are expected to be key parts of the new position, with merchandise trade between Canada and the UK worth approximately $30-billion per year.

Negotiating a post-Brexit deal will likely be a top priority for Goodale, adding to two immediate agenda items: The G7 meetings in May and June, and climate change meetings later this year.

In addition to handling Canada's agriculture portfolio between 1993 & 1997, Goodale was also at various times minister of natural resources, public works, finance and government services.

Goodale will work out of the Canadian high commission located on Trafalgar Square in London while his family remains in Saskatchewan.
