Jian Ghomeshi, former host of CBC Radio's "Q", faces four charges of sexual assault and one count of choking.
Toronto Police announced the charges today, one month after the 47-year-old was fired from the CBC's most popular radio show. Officials say the investigation began on October 31.
His employer had previously stated information had come to light about his personal life that had made it impossible for the organization to continue their relationship. CBC officials say Ghomeshi was fired when "graphic evidence" that he had harmed a woman surfaced.
In the days following his firing, Ghomeshi took to Facebook stating that he enjoyed what was described as rough, but consensual sex. He also launched a $55-million lawsuit against his former employer.
After his Facebook revelation, a total of nine women came forward with allegations of violent sexual encounters with Ghomeshi.
The disgraced radio host has since withdrawn his lawsuit against the CBC and is reportedly expected to pay $18,000 in legal fees.
Ghomeshi has been released on $100,000 bail. He must stay with his mother and cannot leave the country.
He has deleted all social media, including his Twitter and Facebook pages.
