The Lambton Kent District School Board is looking to stray away from punishing smokers and adopt a more forgiving method of discipline.
The Alternative Choices initiative allows Lambton County students who have been caught smoking on school property to go to information sessions as opposed to getting a fine.
LKDSB Director of Education Jim Costello says they offer a more productive alternative to discipline. "They would be educated about the perils of smoking and the effect it has on their health. That would occur at a later date and at a different location.
Costello adds he's heard Chatham-Kent is looking to adopt a similar program. The public health unit has tried a similar program in the past, but it saw info sessions happening in-school.
