Morning Commute Looks Messy

The drive into work Wednesday morning could be downright hazardous if predictions of freezing rain overnight materialize.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement describing a low-pressure system from Colorado tracking across the Great Lakes overnight. With temperatures of -2 C (28 F) expected when the system arrives around 2am, the agency anticipates a few hours of freezing rain before it warms up enough to turn precipitation into rain. The 24-hour forecast suggests that change over could start around 5am.

Meteorologist says the system will affect a large swath of southern Ontario, from Windsor, east to Toronto, and up to the Bruce Peninsula. "The timing will be slightly different," says Coulson. "We're expecting the risk of freezing rain to be first and foremost in the extreme southwest, in the Windsor area in the overnight hours and then that risk will be a little later in the morning as you go further east."

In some areas, up to 5 mm (0.19 in) of ice could accumulate.
