Crash Underlines Car Seat Safety

A 5-year-old boy who was involved in a serious collision near Blenheim is now out of the hospital and recovering from his injuries.

Chatham-Kent police say the boy was thrown through one of the windows of the van he was riding in last Thursday, after the vehicle spun out of control during poor weather conditions and was hit by an oncoming cube van. The driver of the van the boy was in, is charged with failing to ensure a child is properly secured.

"Being a parent, I know first-hand that installing a carseat can be very overwhelming -- there are locking clips, tethers, harnesses, chest clips," says Constable Renee Cowell. "We'd like to encourage parents to contact the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit for assistance."

Cowell is also reminding parents that the health unit hosts monthly car seat clinics in the area. The next one is scheduled for April 21 at Victory Ford on Richmond St. in Chatham.
