School Board Addressing Accessibility

Tecumseh Public School in Chatham is the latest to receive an elevator for physically-disabled students.

Officials with the Lambton Kent District School Board say school accessibility is improved based on available funding and student need.

Director of Education Jim Costello says they're combating accessibility issues as they deal with lack of funding. He adds accessibility legislation requires this type of construction. "It's really a non-negotiable item. You have a student with a physical disability, it may be a teacher or staff member, and they need to get up stairs. We have to do our best and we're happy to do it."

Officials say the elevator will cost around $320,000. Installation will wrap up in the fall.
