Ice Fishermen Are 87% Compliant

Overfishing, not having a license, using too many lines, and not registering an ice fishing hut are some of the 49 charges laid by Ministry of Natural Resources officials in southwestern Ontario this winter.

MNR officials say they checked 1,200 anglers from January to March on Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Rondeau Bay and the Detroit and St. Clair rivers.

A total of 108 warnings were also issued. That doesn't include charges and warnings related to safety infractions under the Liquor Licence Act, the Off-Road Vehicles Act and the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act.

Overall, enforcement officers say 87% of anglers checked were compliant with provincial legislation.
