Jobless Jump Compared To Recession

Windsor's jobless rate jump of 1.5% last month is the largest increase since the 2008 recession.

Statistics Canada says one of the reasons for the city's 11.1% unemployment rate is temporary layoffs, like the workers at Chrysler who are off during the plant's retooling.

Statistics Canada labour force survey analyst Andrew Fields says this is how the survey works, even though those employees will have jobs when they return. "The logic behind it is that they're on temporary layoff, technically their labour force is not being used," says Fields. "It's kind of a reduction in productivity in the region in terms of labour."

Once again, the city had the highest unemployment rate in Canada. Saint John, NB is second on the list with a jobless rate of 9.2% in March.

The economy added nearly 29,000 jobs across the country last month, keeping the national unemployment rate steady at 6.8%. Ontario's rate also didn't change coming in at 6.9%.
