OPP Starts 911 Texting

The Ontario Provincial Police is improving its emergency response with the launch of Text with 911.

Starting today, the OPP is equipped to receive emergency calls via text from those who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired.

Members of those communities will need to register their cell phones with their wireless carrier first. For those with more than one phone, each phone will have to be registered individually, and some older models are not compatible with the technology.

The service is not intended for use by the general public.

Introducing the service has involved months of preparation, and more information is available on the OPP website.
