Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Chris Pronger is shifting his attention from playing hockey to helping those on the ice.
Pronger hasn't played since 2011 after sustaining injuries during a game causing vision impairment.
Although he's still signed with the Flyers, his new job in the NHL's Player Safety Division has been keeping him busy. "I feel like it's going well. There was a learning curve in the beginning, like any new job you have to kind of of learn the tricks of the trade on that side of the fence," says Pronger. "Learning the subtleties of what is a fine, what is a warning, what is a suspension -- that type of stuff. And when a player is or is not trying to do something on the ice."
Pronger says he's witnessing somewhat of a new culture on the ice among players in the NHL. "I think for the most part with the new rules over the last three or four years there has been a concerted effort by the players to understand them and abide by them a lot better with the leagues crackdown on opening up the game," says Pronger.
Pronger was the keynote speaker at the tenth annual WESPY Awards in Windsor.
