Provincial police were called to the Thunderbird Plaza around 2:30pm Sunday. Officers say a 35-year-old man punched another man in the face so hard that he suffered serious injury and was taken to hospital.
The injuries were so severe that police are still trying to determine if a weapon was used in the assault.
The accused is also charged with breaching probation and causing a disturbance.
SPS Board Chair Kelly Ash said the decision followed discussions with Acting Chief Mike Federico and aligns with practices at other police services.
