Weather Right For Asparagus

The conditions are right for large amounts of asparagus to be available this weekend.

John Jaques grows the springtime-favourite vegetable just north of Thamesville and says it's starting to pop up quickly now, although it is a bit later than some years.

"Some years you get that heat wave, asparagus thinks it's spring and pops out of the ground and then gets frozen off and that's a big loss," he says. "Hopefully we can avoid any of that happening from here on in."

Jaques had been irrigating because his soil was dry, but says rain this week and warmer weather are causing the crop to grow quickly.
