The new crossing being built between Windsor and Detroit will be known as the Gordie Howe International Bridge.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder, along with members of the Howe family, unveilled the name in Windsor today.
Snyder says it didn't take them long to decide on the name. "The idea was the Prime Minister's. He thought it would be a great thing, and it was not a tough decision-making process. He said, 'I think Gordie Howe would be a great name.' And it's like, 'Yeah!'"
When asked if any other names were in consideration for the new bridge, Snyder replied, "Gordie Howe, Gordie Howe and Gordie Howe." Harper says Howe represents skill, strength and endurance, and that's exactly what he wants this bridge -- expected to be built by 2020 -- to be a symbol of.
