PUC Ready For Algae Blooms

The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission is ready if there is another algae bloom in Lake Erie.

"We do visual checks and monitor on a regular basis," says PUC General Manager Tom Kissner. "So our operators and chief operators actually do visual checks several times throughout the day. We also do micro-system sampling on a weekly basis."

"We shut off our zebra mussel control systems," says Kissner. "That's a disinfectant system to control zebra mussels. It's one of the first things that we do, we want to make sure that the blue-green algae cell actually stays intact."

Getty's Beach and Pier Road Beach in Wheatley were closed on Friday due to an algae bloom, but reopened on Saturday.
